Philanthropy and Construction

Philanthropy and Construction

Construction and philanthropy are not mutually exclusive. Both are good for the community. One can find a number of companies that support philanthropic efforts in the construction industry. Among these companies are M.A. Mortenson Company, Consigli Construction Company, Skanska, and Schwob Building Company.

Schwob Building Company

The Schwob Building Company is committed to philanthropy, and it does so in many different ways. For example, the company donates to charities that support children. It encourages its employees to participate in company-wide charitable activities and matches employees’ contributions. It also supports Camp John Marc, which provides a summer camp experience for children with disabilities.

In addition to philanthropy, the company also supports other causes. It donates to the BUILD program, which transforms shipping containers into portable medical clinics. Recently, it donated $60,000 to this organization, which provides life-saving medical care in developing countries. It also contributes to the Associated General Contractors of America and the Association of Builders and Contractors of America, and recently raised $56,000 for the Children’s Health System of Texas.

M.A. Mortenson Company

Mortenson Construction Company is an international construction company headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Founded in 1954 by Mauritz A. Mortenson, the company has grown to employ over 7,500 people at offices across the country. Revenue last year was $4.6 billion, making it the 16th largest contractor in the U.S. It also has international operations in Canada and China.

The company’s community involvement is extensive. Its Denver office team recently donated 300 hours of volunteer time to 11 nonprofits in the metro area. Team members served the Mile High United Way, the City & County of Denver – Parks & Recreation, the Butterfly Pavilion, the Florence Crittenton Foundation, the Food Bank of the Rockies, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Transportation & Construction Girl (Hoya Foundation), and Meals on Wheels, among many others.

Despite its diverse project portfolio, the M.A. Mortenson Company focuses on smaller projects during slower times. For example, the company finished the $254 million TCF Bank Stadium at the University of Minnesota in 2009, and is currently working on a $7 million plumbing replacement project at a University dorm. In addition, the company has taken on jobs to renovate small offices. Despite its size, the company enjoys revenue growth of fifteen percent a year.

For businesses seeking a general contractor, it is always a good idea to prequalify a company before you engage them in negotiations. This will allow you to learn more about their business practices and goals. A prequalification profile, for example, will give you information about their payment practices and previous subcontractors. This can help you secure a better deal. And if you are interested in working with a local general contractor, it may be a good idea to contact a local firm and request a project estimate.

Mortenson is also involved in the expansion of Kaiser Permanente’s Everett Medical Center in Washington. The new 150,000-square-foot ambulatory facility will incorporate the IPD methodology, which allows a contractor to target value, rather than the construction budget. It will also involve key trade partners, who are involved in the design process and are actively involved in the project. In addition, interdisciplinary teams are developing design solutions that promote prefabrication, modularization, and reduced construction time.

Consigli Construction Company

Consigli Construction Company is a fourth-generation family-owned company, providing construction management in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic areas. Consigli’s enduring business model emphasizes community involvement, a strong professional development structure, and an eye towards growth. The company has earned the distinction of being a Forbes Best Employer and is a proud member of the Better Business Bureau. Its services include commercial, institutional, and life sciences construction.

Consigli Construction Company philanthropic efforts are well-established. Its website highlights its work with Habitat for Humanity, Wentworth Institute of Technology, and Cambridge Family and Children’s Service. The company is also active in the Boston Cares Bed Project.

Skanska

For the past seventy years, Skanska has been active in the Puget Sound region and has continued to invest in the local economy. Its projects have ranged from building major infrastructure to local landmarks, and from tenant improvements to sustainable real estate. The company is also known for being a strong corporate philanthropist, creating new opportunities for small, traditionally underserved businesses.

One of Skanska’s primary goals is to help the local community receive better healthcare. The company is committed to building health care facilities, and participates in the Charity Challenge, which helps build hospitals in the local community. They also built the Center for Women and Children’s Health at the Christiana Care Health System in Newark, Delaware, as well as the new five-story hospital for Inspira Health Network in Gloucester County, NJ.

Skanska’s Philadelphia office recently held its 11th annual Charity Challenge golf outing, where the company donated $28,500 to nine charities. Since the program began in 2008, Skanska has donated $312,600 to 91 nonprofit organizations. In addition to funding philanthropy projects, the company also supports charities by sponsoring events such as charity walks and food drives.

Skanska USA is one of the largest multinational construction firms in the world. It recently broke ground on the headquarters of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting nonprofits and communities. The new headquarters will be located in the Belmont-Hillsboro area and house 46 people.

Another high profile Skanska construction project is the Upchurch University Center at Longwood University. The new building will feature eight4,000 square feet of classrooms, a large conference center, and an auditorium. Skanska also renovated the tennis courts at the Longwood campus.
