Construction Methods – A Knowledge-Based Decision-Making System

Construction methods are key to the productivity of construction projects. However, the selection of methods is sometimes made without a systematic approach, which can have negative consequences. This paper proposes a knowledge-based decision-making system to support the selection process. We conducted semistructured interviews with three construction firms to collect the data that we present in this paper. The data presented are categorized into three categories: Environmental impact, productivity and costs. By assessing the different categories, we can make a better decision.

Modern methods of construction

Modern methods of construction are a great way to build homes faster and more efficiently. These innovative techniques can reduce construction time by up to 50%, making them an ideal solution for meeting housing delivery targets. Government agency Homes England has been a pioneer, using modern methods to build 1,500 new homes across the country. It has also commissioned a research study to test these methods and provide verifiable performance data.

Modular construction is a type of modern method that was developed in the aftermath of the Second World War to address the need for residential buildings. It became even more popular during the housing crisis of 2005. This method allows you to construct entire homes out of factory-built modules. Modern methods of construction also reduce unnecessary waste and improve quality of work.

Another modern method of construction involves the use of pre-engineered heavy steel structures, which emerged from industrial facilities at the start of the 20th century. The former method involved designing each element before it was built, then dimensioning and joining them at the construction site. These structures are a popular choice for buildings with wide spans. They also make use of repetitive frames using pre-made profiles. This method is also the preferred choice for international contracting projects, and is a great alternative to the traditional method of building buildings from scratch.

Modern methods of construction combine traditional methods with modern technologies. Some of the newer techniques include hybrid prefabrication. This method combines several construction methods, such as heavy steel construction, panelised construction, and volumetric construction. This method has many benefits, including great flexibility in layout and appearance. Another popular option is precast panels, which are manufactured off-site and transported to the construction site. When assembled, they form a solid structure, and offer accuracy, speed, and quality. Some of these panels can also include windows, doors, and furnishing.

Techniques

Techniques in construction are the tools used to determine the costs of construction projects. These tools can help the construction company to create a budget and to estimate the costs of new projects. Analogous estimating, also known as top-down estimating, is one technique. It involves using previous projects to estimate costs and add expenses to new projects.

Parametric estimating is a popular technique in the construction industry. This technique divides a project into squares per unit meter, which can be used to estimate remaining construction costs. Using this method helps to pinpoint potential problems early. This technique is especially useful when a project is repetitive, as it helps determine the cost of each unit.

One of the most important techniques is using expert judgment. This method uses an expert’s knowledge and judgment to estimate the cost of construction projects. It can be used for complex projects. However, it must be compared to similar projects to determine whether the method is accurate. The results of the evaluation can be used for planning purposes.

Costs

Before choosing a construction method, it’s important to determine how much it will cost. The actual cost of construction methods may be higher or lower than the estimated cost. A cost estimate can be based on various methods and statistical formulas. Alternatively, the contractor can make use of a “three-point” estimate, which accounts for a wide range of risks. A high cost estimate might reflect a particularly challenging site, while a low cost estimate could reflect average site conditions.

Cost indexes take into account recent trends in construction input prices and inflation to determine construction costs. They also consider the construction industry’s reports and government data. Two private gauges that are often used to estimate costs are the Turner Building Index and the Engineering News-Record. Both of these gauges take into account the number of different types of materials and labor.

An accurate construction estimate will allow project managers and property owners to minimize risk. It will also enable the company to plan a seamless relocation for employees and inventory. Moreover, it will allow the company to decide whether it is worth selling or giving up the lease of its old premises. A detailed estimate also allows the company to decide on the right time to hire staff and purchase inventory.

Once the schematic design phase (SD) is complete, a professional cost estimator or a general contractor can estimate the cost of the project. They will review the SD drawings and the scope narrative and ask detailed questions about construction costs.

Environmental impact

The environmental impact of construction methods is an important issue to consider. In addition to their potential for damage to the environment, construction practices can negatively impact public health. In the United States alone, the construction industry generates over 160 million tons of non-industrial waste per year. In order to avoid causing such problems, construction practices must change. Newer strategies for construction use less energy and emit less CO2.

Sustainable construction involves using renewable and recyclable resources, which reduce the need for energy, water, and materials. It also reduces toxic waste. Green technology and energy efficiency are also important components of sustainable construction. The construction industry has been ranked as one of the largest contributors to global warming, and implementing sustainable methods of construction will significantly reduce the impact on the environment.

Sustainable construction methods have become a priority for mainstream construction firms. While they are expensive, renewable and sustainable materials are increasingly popular. The increasing popularity of sustainable construction has also helped reduce the costs of sustainable construction. As an added bonus, sustainable construction techniques are less expensive than conventional construction. Moreover, they are more energy-efficient and reduce noise.

In the United States, the EPA has developed a set of rules and regulations regarding the environmental impact of construction methods. These rules and regulations are designed to help construction companies improve their environmental performance. As a result, more than two-thirds of construction projects have already made improvements to their environmental status.

Case studies

Case studies are used in construction education to provide insight into the methods and techniques used in construction. Case studies typically involve a dilemma, personal history, and other background information about the problem. The instructors’ goal is to have students analyze the case and consider solutions, as well as the consequences of their decisions. This method promotes learning by doing, including analytical and decision-making skills, oral communications, and teamwork.

In writing a case study, students must have an interest in the topic. Case studies that are not interesting to students are less likely to be helpful to the class. It is also important to use dialogue, which is a popular writing style. The percentage varies greatly between different types of writing, but construction case studies may use as much as two to five percent dialogue.

The Case Studies of Construction Materials journal follows an author-pays open access model. Contributors are asked to pay a fee for each published article. This charge helps cover the costs associated with the publication of articles. These costs include managing article submission, typesetting, and tagging articles, as well as hosting them on dedicated servers. It also helps fund sales and marketing costs. It also ensures that the articles are preserved after publication.

Case studies are useful for comparison purposes because they can illustrate different approaches to a problem. It is also a good way to understand the issues involved in a project and gain a deeper emotional attachment to it. If you want to know more about a topic, try reading a few books or articles about it. You may be surprised at what you find!
